Film Review
British director Carol Reed's postwar tale of love and lost friendship is a masterpieceŚranked high on AFI's all-time best movies list as well as in the opinion of film lovers. Starting with Graham Greene's excellent story, liberally coated with Anton Karas' evocative zither music, given shape by Reed's unerring instinct and cinematography, and sporting great performances by the Alida Valli-Joseph Cotton-Orson Welles trio as well as from the implacable Trevor Howard, this film never hits a false note or lurches into syrupy sentimentality or artificiality; like all great art it is authentic all the way through. An unforgettable, inexhaustibly rich oeuvre.
