Film Review
"The Adventures of Robin Hood" of 1938 is the definitive version of the Nottingham forest's colorful legend. Errol Flynn is perfectly cast as the swashbuckling protector of the poor and most ably supported by a talented cast. Basil Rathbone, as the villainous Sir Guy of Gisborne, and Olivia de Havilland, as maid Marian, once again join Flynn in a Warner Brother's historical extravaganza, as they had in the earlier "Captain Blood" (1935). This time around things get even more colorful, thanks to Technicolor, making the best of lavish sets and costumes, two million dollar's worth—Warner's most expensive ever at that time. Top-notch supporting actors Claude Rains (as a gleefully evil King John), Melville Cooper (as a wonderfully cowardly Sheriff of Nottingham), and Eugene Pallette (as the redoubtably rotund Friar Tuck) add yet more enjoyment to the picture. And, as if this were not enough, Michael Curtiz's (Casablanca) stylish and atmospheric direction, including his trademark use of shadows, as well as Erich Korngold's tremendous Oscar-winning score make for the very definition of a cinema classic.
