Film Review
"Double Indemnity" figures among the most well-remembered of the film noir genre, and rightfully so. Cast, script, director; all the required ingredients are here: Barbara Stanwick reprises her stock-in-trade femme fatale portraying nuances of ambiguity, poison, and attraction. Fred MacMurray (of later My Three Sons TV ignominy) is very effective as a not-so-slick LA insurance salesman who gets fatally trapped, and Edward G. Robinson, chimes in with a typically workmanlike performance as his bull-dog claims investigator colleague. The original story by James McCain (The Postman Always Rings Twice), reworked by Raymond Chandler and Billy Wilder is a gem of suspense and hard-boiled dialogue. Wilder's direction never loses its tempo and already at this relatively early stage in his career establishes him as a premier director.
