Patricia Cardwell (Deanna Durbin) is the daughter of a poor, unemployed violinist (Adolph Menjou) whose musician friends are also out of work. The men organize their own orchestra, but all they need is a prestigious leader. Through persistence, charm, and a few misunderstandings, Patricia will try to persuade Leopold Stokowski (played by himself) to employ her father and his musical friends. Their performance of Liszt's "Second Hungarian Rhapsody" wins him over and he becomes their conductor and leads to a radio contract.
